Relief: A means or thing that relieves pain, distress, anxiety, etc. Whether we admit it or not we are a global family with global family needs. It is estimated that one third of the world’s food supply goes to waste while approximately 9% of the world population is undernourished. Neither of these figures are encouraging which means that as a collective society we need to avoid any interruptions to the present system. In other words, if we view ourselves as humanists, those having a strong interest in or concern for human welfare, values, and dignity, then any things which disrupt the existing flows of goods and services will cause pain, distress, and anxiety. Of course, the suffering is extremely relative which is problematic. If you are healthy, a high income earner with plenty of financial protections, and live far beyond war zones then your concerns will no doubt be lessened. However, approximately one in four American households are living paycheck to paycheck and unchecked inflation along with falling wages can be catastrophic. We are in the midst of a civilizational struggle essentially between the haves and the have nots. For 47 years the people of Iran have been shut off from the free exchange of goods and services for no other reason than they want control over their own land and natural resources. If life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is the standard for one sovereign state, why would it not be the same privilege afforded to all sovereign states?
