Religion: Something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience. Osophy: Greek word sophia, which means wisdom, learning, or knowledge. Etymology: It is often derived by clipping larger nouns like philosophy (love of wisdom) or theosophy (divine wisdom) to refer generally to an abstract area of philosophical study. So here we are defining RELIGOSOPHY as the study of the vast variety of belief systems which from the Latin religion (stem of religio “conscientiousness, piety,” equivalent to relig(are) “to tie, fasten” (re- re- + ligare “to bind, tie). For instance; my new religion or yoga, is walking and keeping moving as much as possible as Aristotle stated “every movement takes time and is for the sake of an end”, Nicomachean Ethics. He taught that humans are not born virtuous by merely thinking about it; they must physically move, practice, and act. During my walks I explore different ideas and belief systems to consider what paths humanity may follow to resolve our differences which are causing so much angst among us. I grew up following my parents’ lead with the Presbyterian Church, Western monotheism. From age 20 I embraced Daoism, Zen, and socialism from a spiritual perspective. For the next 50 years I embraced Bengali Vaishnavism, which is again monotheistic religious views. Religion or Theology (the systematic and rational study of religion, religious beliefs, and the nature of divinity) generally begins with an answer that there is an Absolute Authority and in most cases there is a divine book (Bible -Old & New Testament, Koran, Bhagavad-gita, etc) which administers those beliefs. Osophy generally implies that we study and inquire into those belief systems and make rational conclusions. The time has come for more of us to inquire, keep open minds, and develop tolerance for other beliefs and cultural identities which are different or even opposed to ours. The Doomsday Clock keeps approaching midnight and we desperately need to turn it back!
