Interpretation: Synonyms – analysis, clarification, explanation, judgment, meaning, perception, reading, and translation. No matter how clear and straightforward we or others try to be whatever we say or do or expressions we project wil get interpreted. We experience regularly how others misinterpret our intentions which can happen merely by an inadvertent facial expression or misplaced word. The U.S. Surgeon General declared a loneliness epidemic in 2023, with roughly half of American adults reporting, or having experienced, measurable levels of loneliness even before the COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis is a significant public health issue with mortality risks similar to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. Key contributors include reduced in-person interaction, rising reliance on social media, rapid social changes, and, in many cases, a lack of deep, meaningful relationships. This is where developing our interpretation skills is of paramount importance! Americans move more than any other people on the planet, adding another bump in the road to developing meaningful relationships. The older I get the more value I place on every personal, physical interaction I have with another person. When interacting with clerks at grocery stores, hardware stores, or any of our daily interactions it is so easy to be encouraging and uplifting to the employees as they usually wear a name tag allowing you to say their name. We all know that hearing one’s name always gives us a little boost. The vast masses of workers who keep our society flowing well are hardly earning enough income to meet daily expenses and it is easy enough to cheer them up and by doing so ourselves as well. It’s not rocket science, just plain old common sense to be gentle and kind at every opportunity and practice being extremely careful about interpreting another’s thoughts and actions when it rarely matters anyway…
