Collaboration: The act or process of working together or cooperating. Yesterday, Memorial Day, our family had our own memorial for our matriarch; Rita Dunn (1920-2004). Erin, her granddaughter, is helping to sponsor ‘The Equine healing collaborative at the Rita Dunn healing Center.’ The Equine Healing Center is located near Salinas, California, on 36 acres where they have 49 rescued horses. They also have some goats and pigs which were rescued, as all the animals in many cases were infirm and headed for slaughter. The Equine Healing Collaborative is a nonprofit mental health organization that provides equine-assisted psychotherapy and holistic counseling services. Their mission is to support recovery, self-discovery, emotional healing, and personal growth through meaningful interactions with horses and nature in a safe, therapeutic environment. The organization offers a wide range of services for children, teens, adults, couples, families, veterans, and support groups. Services are offered on a sliding-scale basis, and the organization accepts Medi-Cal and several insurance providers to help make care accessible to the community. Erin’s son Finn just graduated from the Stevenson High School and is headed to college and now Erin’s new project is volunteering at the Center. Gemma – Assistant Executive Director, gave us a wonderful explanation and history with amazing stories about the incredible transformations people have had associating with the horses particularly. Horses, due to their non-judgmental nature and the primarily non-verbal bond they form are widely utilized in equine-assisted therapies to help individuals cope with PTSD, addiction, and severe behavioral challenges.
