Desensitized: Adjective as in unemotional; “along for the ride”, apathetic, disinterested, passive, emotionless, indifferent, lethargic, etc., etc. This is our major obstacle to resolving serious issues facing our species at this colossal, momentous moment in our global history. We have to start taking stock of our own personal responsibility as members of the human race to add positive and productive value to society at large. My friend Michael King, now departed, used to regularly say, “Productive achievement, the noblest activity of humankind!” As far as I’m concerned, just being kind and considerate is sufficient if one feels or is unable to make any other contributions to the upliftment and advancement of society. The Scientific Age of the last 500 years has accomplished practically everything we need to survive and thrive as a collective species. Now that our physical means have been solved, the new challenge is to resolve our emotional, psychological, philosophical, demographic, financial, racial, theological, gender, and ecological differences. Fortunately or unfortunately this is even greater and seemingly more insurmountable than exploring outer space and harnessing atomic energy! These are all abstract obstacles, not things we can see, touch, hear, smell or taste. The Scientific Revolution is essentially over and the Post-Modern era has commenced. The moment is NOW we all have to wake up, become sensitive to society and our environment, and make our own individual best efforts to “Be the change you wish to see in the world”, as Gandhi so wisely considered…
