Justice…

Justice: The quality of being just; righteousness, equitableness, or moral rightness. However, an alternative view comes from Thrasymachus the Greek sophist who argues in Book 1 of Plato’s Republic that “justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger”. He claims that laws are made by ruling parties to serve their own interests, defining justice as mere obedience to these rules, which ultimately benefits the powerful rather than the weak. So each and every one of us has to decide for ourselves which definition of ‘justice’ we prefer by which to lead our lives. We tend to think of Nicolo Machiavelli as a principle architect of modern political thought. However, Thucydides, an Athenian general (460 BC – 400 BC), was first to propose the principle, “might makes right”. He also stated, “the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must”. He is regarded as the “father of scientific history,” and is famous for his objective, evidence-based approach, focusing on human nature and political power over divine intervention. What is playing out in the Middle East is of extremely major consequences for practically all of us inhabiting this planet. Who is the strongest or willing to suffer the most pain? Who is on the side of justice and righteousness? Who is willing to throw in the proverbial towel and say, “enough is enough”? My guess is as good as yours and we are all waiting with bated breath hoping something happens sooner than later…
